Meet Ben Tindale, managing butcher @Shearerbutchers and vice-captain of Team GB Butchery.
Who is Ben Tindale?
I started working as a butcher at the age of 17. Initially, my work centred around traditional carcass butchery. It’s only been in the last few years that my focus shifted towards pushing the boundaries and developing what we know in the trade as value-added products. Essentially, these are products that provide a level of convenience for customers, removing preparation steps so that they simply need to be cooked before serving.
What makes you a Stalwart?
I consider myself to be a hard worker who is dedicated to the craft of butchery. Furthermore, I aim to instil that ethos in the team I work alongside. I’m also very passionate about promoting butchery globally and aiming to inspire future generations.
When did your passion for food start?
Some of my earliest memories are of me sitting on the kitchen worktop baking cakes with my mum. I distinctly remember being covered in a dusting of flour, cleaning out the last of the cake mix from the bowl with my finger, and the aroma of freshly baked sponges coming out from the oven.
Before beginning my butchery career, my passion for food truly started when I began working for my family’s restaurant at the age of 14. After being introduced to vegetable preparation and washing up, I progressed to helping to cook the freshly prepared, locally sourced and seasonal meals for our clientele.
What’s your life motto?
“Forever a student” – No matter who you are or where you are in your life, you should always have an open mind. There’s always something more to learn.
Why choose a Stalwart apron?
From the lightweight comfortable fit through to the quality of finish and customisable options, Stalwart Crafts produce a premium apron that caters to a wide range of needs.
What’s in the pipeline?
With the newly formed UK Lions: GB squad I will be practising with the team in preparation for the World Butchers Challenge in Paris 2025. Before then I’ll be competing at The Great Yorkshire Show & Smoke & Fire Festival butchery competitions as well as the World BBQ Chanpionships in Stuttgart with Monolith UK.
Alway from competitions, I’m excited to be working at numerous food festivals this summer including Taste of London where you will find me at the Live Fire Cooking School.
I will also be continuing to refine my craft and steering the course as managing butcher for G. Shearer and Son Butchers in South Lincolnshire as well as working alongside Raps UK marinades as their brand ambassador demonstrating to the industry.
What’s your favourite Stalwart Product?
Can’t beat my Stalwart Cross Strap Deluxe Apron.
